Introducing the upgraded D12D engine, developed to meet the upcoming emissions regulations, including US (EPA) step 2, California (CARB) step 2, and Europe (EU) step 2 standards. With the same power and torque specifications as the previous D12C engine, production of the D12D engine began in November 2004. Additionally, to comply with the Tier 3 / Stage IIIA legislative requirements for exhaust emissions, a new version of the Volvo D12 engine was created for A35D and A40D models. This new engine met US (EPA) Tier 3, California (CARB) Tier 3, and Europe (EU) stage IIIA emission standards. The implementation of V-ACT (Volvo Advanced Combustions Technology) occurred in April 2005 for the US market and January 2006 for the EU market, while the Tier 2/Step II compliant D12D engine remained available for affected markets.
